How the Sedona Method Helps You in Challenging Financial Times Self Employment Issues with the Bad Economy: Practical and Emotional Tips

There are just over 10 million self-employed individuals inthe United States, a number that fell by 3 percent in 2008. While those who are self-employed don’t have to worry about being laid off, instead, they face a unique set of self-employment issues in a down economy.

For starters, a small drop in business can be a big setback for someone who is self-employed, and unable to absorb losses like a large corporation. In challenging economic times, it can be difficult to find new clients or customers to replace those that are lost.

Further, unlike those who work for large companies or the government, self-employed individuals have little, if any, safety net, including typically no way to collect unemployment benefits.

Not surprisingly, a survey by the National Association of the Self-Employed found that the slowing economy is a primary concern for self-employed entrepreneurs in 2009, as well as a top issue threatening their livelihood (another was rising health care costs).

What Can You Do if You’re Struggling?

In a typical economic environment, new businesses most often fail because of insufficient capital, lack of management experience, poor inventory management and lack of initial planning, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

But to survive in a down economy takes even more perseverance. The U.S. Small Business Administration recommends entrepreneurs pay closer attention to planning, inventory, budgeting and marketing.

Another practical resource that may help you out is Self-Employment Assistance; if you’ve recently been laid off and want to start your own business certain states offer self-employment assistance to help you do so. The benefit will be the same weekly amount as your regular unemployment benefit, and may even continue while you are engaged in self-employment activities full-time.

The catch is that you only qualify if you’re eligible for unemployment, which does not apply to most who are already self-employed. This voluntary program is so far available in Delaware, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

The Most Important Step for the Self-Employed

Perhaps the most important resource of all is available to you free of charge, and that is your attitude.

“Remember that no matter what is going on in the market or in your industry, you can still survive and even prosper,” says Hale Dwoskin, CEO and Director of Training of Sedona Training Associates. “Often the only difference between those who survive and prosper during difficult times and those who don’t is their attitude.”

Still, plowing full-steam ahead in a down economy can be scary, especially when you feel you have no safety net. So how can you turn your mindset into a positive one, and keep it that way?

“The most powerful way to maintain a consistently positive attitude and state of mind is to release the negatives,” Dwoskin says. “So when you hear news that you find disturbing or when you're dealing with the inevitable challenges of running a business remember to keep releasing.”

Releasing is easy when you learn The Sedona Method, a powerful tool to help you let go of your fear and anxiety and access your intuitive powers and higher consciousness. Becoming open to your inherent ability for clear reason and intuitive knowingness is so important because it will tell you what is appropriate NOW -- when money may be tighter than usual, you may have fewer employees, or you’re struggling to keep your business open altogether.

“The more you release the better you will feel, the clearer your decisions will be, and the more effective you will be at weathering this current economic storm,” Dwoskin says.
